We are pleased to announce an upcoming Savannah event to raise money for the Coastal Georgia Greenway. The Savannah Jaycees have adopted CGG as a project and are raising money for our project this Wednesday, April 21 (apologies for the error in the post previously noting this event on Thursday), with a Savannah pub crawl — come on out and drink a toast to connectivity!
Savannah Jaycees are celebrating Earth Day by raising awareness and funds for this year’s honoree initiative, the Coastal Georgia Greenway. Join the Jaycees Wednesday, April 21 from 6-8 p.m. as they go green for Georgia with a fundraising Pub-crawl. See the release below for full details!
The pub-crawl includes well-known downtown Savannah establishments One Eyed Lizzy’s, Fiddlers, Murphy’s Law and SEED Eco Lounge. The evening will kick off at 6 p.m. with a toast to Coastal Georgia Greenway and drink specials at One Eyed Lizzy’s, 417 East River St., and end with pizza and eco-conscious cheers at SEED Eco Lounge, 39 Montgomery St. All participants will receive a Jaycees reusable cup, the pub’s drink special of choice and will be able to purchase $1 draft beer. The pub-crawl is open to the public of legal drinking age. Please register via e-mail at info@savannahjaycees.com and bring $10 to be donated to Coastal Georgia Greenway. Also, $10 tickets are available prior to the event at SEED Eco Lounge. A ticket purchase automatically ensures registration and includes the Coastal Georgia Greenway donation.
The Savannah Jaycees is a civic organization of young professionals and entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 40, who have been taking an active part in the local community since the 1940s. The Greenway is moving forward, and we hope to continue to press an exciting demonstration project, the 35 mile Island Hopper Trail as noted this article today from the Jacksonville Times-Union:
To kick start the project, Coastal Georgia Greenway directors will ask DOT for $17 million to fund the Island Hopper Trail. The 35-mile route would link Jekyll Island to the Sapelo Island Visitors Center via the 6-mile Jekyll causeway, U.S. 17 and Georgia 99, winding past connecting trails in Brunswick, St. Simons and Darien.

Stay tuned for what develops next!
Many of you in the Savannah area also probably caught the excellent coverage of the Coastal Georgia Greenway in the current issue of the South Magazine, on newsstands now, but if not, follow the link or grab a copy today!

As noted in today’s SMN, the rail trail on McQueen’s Island adjacent to Fort Pulaski has suffered from tidal erosion (and likely from waves sent across from the shipping channel of the Savannah River). Cheers to Chatham County for their efforts to restore the embattled section of trail using oyster bricks and soil cement.

With that bidding process under their belt, we call on the county to make it a 1-2 punch by using the funding of over $1 million that has already been appropriated for the Truman Linear Park trail phase II. The first section is already in place from Kerry Street/Dixie Avenue to 52nd along the west side of the Truman Parkway. Once connected, there will be access for off-road nonmotorized use connecting Daffin Park and Lake Mayer. The funding is there — let’s put it to work!

As many of you are aware, we have been working for several months now to bring a group of leaders from Coastal Georgia together on a tour of the best and less than best of trails in Northeast Florida as a tutorial on trail building. Registration is now open, and we are looking for up to 25 leaders to join us next January. The registration form is available at this link, or registrants can place a deposit using Paypal (though an additional processing fee applies).
The Savannah-Northeast Florida Workshop on Wheels (SNF-WOW: notice how the hyphen moves) will convene in St. Marys January 14 for four days of riding Northeast Florida trails and the best of accomodations, all the while developing useful tools with the people working to put those trails on the ground. Events will conclude Sunday January 18, one day prior to the Martin Luther King holiday.
Organizers for this Coastal Georgia Greenway event include EverBank Jacksonville, Florida’s St. Johns River Alliance, the First Coast Trails Coalition, and the East Coast Greenway Alliance. All-inclusive cost for attendees has been kept at $450 thanks to significant underwriting by the host committee.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is teaming up with Savannah Tree Foundation to plant trees for National Public Lands Day Saturday September 27. Volunteers can expect to participate in marsh cleanup, trail maintenance, fort cleanup, painting, and of interest to all who look in on the Greenway’s progress, work on continuation of the McQueen’s Island hiker/biker trail.

Of note, Fort Pulaski has identified in their master plan a project to extend the McQueen’s Island trail from their entrance all the way to its eastern boundary at the Lazaretto Creek Bridge, all along the old Savannah to Tybee railbed. This work along with a project from the City of Tybee Island and Chatham County will eventually link Tybee into Fort Pulaski via an off road trail, assuming the appropriate treatment of the Lazaretto Creek bridge could be completed.

Big things are underway for the Coastal Georgia Greenway. After a little over a year of grassroots development, the Coastal Georgia Greenway is planning the launch of its own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Coastal Georgia Greenway, Inc. We will be meeting tomorrow night, Thursday, May 29 at 6:30pm at Holton’s Seafood Restaurant in Midway, I-95 Exit 76, @ US 84 (13711 E Oglethorpe Hwy) to identify a steering committee charged with identifying a board and bylaws for our group.
The nonprofit organization will serve to raise private sector funds that could leverage additional federal funding for development of trails here in coastal Georgia, as well as to develop priorities for acquisition and construction. Please consider attending if you have an interest in trails here in the coast! RSVP to Jo Claire Hickson, johickson [at] comcast [dot] net.

As we have mentioned before, the excitement about Tour de Georgia returning to the coast is all around. It has not been to Savannah since 2003, and the race connects far east and west Chatham County for a spectacle of international professional riders.
This is an opportunity for our local leaders to take action. Much of the route, in particular along the Tybee Road (US 80) is a designated Georgia bike route, though the shoulders include wide rumble strips which make them unridable. The Bull River and Lazaretto Creek Bridges are narrow and have no bicycle facilities. Yet, this scenic stretch of road is still one frequented by serious cyclists from all over the region, and in fact marks the beginning or ending point for many east-west transcontinental rides. Tour de Georgia’s Ride for Research will include this stretch on Sunday, April 20, and will surely demonstrate the hazards cyclists face when riding here.

Let us all take this opportunity to encourage our local, state, and national elected officials to end the delay and make a safe bicycle corridor from Savannah to Tybee a reality. Tybee is in full support of this idea, as we are all aware of the immense potential of cycling tourism for our local economy. We should all echo what Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman notes on the Tour de Georgia website (emphasis is mine):
We are extremely excited that Tour De Georgia officials have selected Tybee Island as the venue for the start of this year’s highly acclaimed bicycle race. The event will bring a great deal of international recognition to Tybee and will additionally provide a major boost to our tourist-driven economy at a time of year when it is most needed. We also hope the event will bring to light the need for State and Local officials to make plans for improving road conditions for the safety of the thousands of cyclists who ride along the Tybee Road from Bull River to the Lazaretto Creek Bridge.

We have been convening meetings and inviting motivated people to join us, and are looking for more. The goal is a 4 day, 4 night trip to ride the trails of Northeast Florida taken by leaders in Savannah and Coastal Georgia to learn more about advancing trails development. The Savannah-Northeast Florida Workshop on Wheels (SNF-WOW) will take place January 14-18, 2009. Organizers include Florida’s St. Johns River Alliance, the First Coast Trails Coalition, and the East Coast Greenway Alliance. All-inclusive cost for attendees will be kept at about $400 thanks to significant underwriting by a host committee.
This event aims to quicken the development of trails for every good purpose in Savannah/Chatham counties as well as in the Florida counties that focus the event. Particular dynamics of the workshop – SNF-WOW! – combine the fun of the ride with the learning that takes place and with the media attention the workshop warrants. In 1979, a similar workshop in Florida led to formation of the Florida bicycling movement, the gubernatorial appointment of Dan Burden to FDOT, a changed transportation culture that for the first time accommodated bikes on the road, and in five years led Florida to national leadership in bicycling program management; today, to leadership in national trails. Timely commitment, relatively few dollars and select leadership can equally influence Georgia’s trails future. SNF-WOW represents a pivotal moment.
Our next meeting regarding SNF-WOW will take place March 28 at Moon River Brewing Company on Bay Street in Savannah, 5:30-7:30pm. RSVP to Jo Claire Hickson, johickson { at } comcast { dot } net, if you plan to attend.
