Chatham County Status Update

We received a summary of the status of the trails projects in Chatham County today.

Of note, Chatham County needs to allocate an additional $500,000 for phase 2 of the Truman Linear Park trail, which is now slated to include a pedestrian bridge over DeRenne Avenue. A consulting engineer will be chosen within 90 days to complete the necessary work to put the project to bid.

Funding details on the Triplett Park/S&O Canal Trail, the McQueen’s Island 1 mile extension to the east, stabilization of the western end of the McQueen’s Island Trail, the Hutchinson Island Trail and the Whitemarsh Island Trail also included in the update, though no specifics on schedules for these were provided.

St. Marys – Fernandina Beach Water Taxi

Amelia River Cruises has purchased a boat, which can hold up to 99 passengers and accomodate bicycles, to operate water taxi service between St. Marys and Fernandina Beach, Florida. The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville has covered this excellent development here.  The water taxi will provide a vital link for the Greenway, linking Georgia to Florida, avoiding what would have been a harrowing crossing on a narrow bridge on highway 17. Details are still being worked out, but service should begin by the fall. While this has been something considered by many locals in both towns, involvement of the East Coast Greenway was the impetus for this service to start.
