Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteer Jim Morrison in Darien, a $500,000 federal transportation enhancement grant for Phase I of the Highlander Trail has been awarded. The trail to be built will run from the existing Darien trail on McIntosh Boulevard (which passes Fort King George) along SR99 (Ridge Road) to the Blue N Hall Road boat ramp, approximately 2.6 miles. This route passes through the Ridge Historic District, where timber barons and Altamaha river pilots built beautiful Victorian homes.

When construction on phase I is complete, we will start the process again for phase II funding to extend the trail to the Sapelo Island Visitor’s Center.

As noted in this article from the AJC today, Georgia Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle has taken the chairmanship of the Tour de Georgia (see this for more on the route announcement) to resurrect it as a driver for economic development. Clearly, we share his enthusiasm and agree with the AJC’s assessment:
Cagle’s primary reason for getting involved is economic development.
No other sport shows off scenery, especially in small towns, like cycling.
“What excited me about it is the economic opportunity that exists to showcase Georgia to the world,” Cagle said. This spring, he wants to nearly double, to 1 million, the number of spectators who gather on Georgia roadsides to watch 120 men in spandex zip by.
That being said, why not extend that to the participatory level? The Coastal Georgia Greenway/East Coast Greenway and other bikeways can do that. We should follow the lead of places like Louisville, Kentucky who have developed extensive bicycling networks. Not only would the Coastal Georgia Greenway network enhance quality of life with recreational and alternative transportation opportunities for residents, but here in the coast, they would also present golden opportunities for tourism and year round economic development.

This morning, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle announced the route for the 2008 Tour de Georgia, a major international 7 day professional cycling race. The first stage, April 21, 2008, will be from Tybee Island to Savannah!
This is wonderful news, as it brings a major cycling event to our area, and should provide a way for us to highlight the need for the Coastal Georgia Greenway, especially considering the potentially dangerous route the average cyclist takes travelling on the US-80 Tybee to Savannah route.
