Earth Day Festival and the Savannah Wheelie Bike Ride

Savannah Wheelie
Fun on bikeways

Hop on your bike and join us in downtown Savannah at Forsyth Park for the first monthly installment of Savannah Wheelie — a casual, social slow paced bike ride to enjoy the sights, sounds, and people of Savannah. Our first ride will be in association with Earth Day festivities at Forsyth Park April 19, led by Mayor Otis Johnson and County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis! Find your cruiser, your old ten speed, your fixie, whatever you like to pedal. Don’t forget to bring the kids! It will be a parade under pedal power — the more the merrier. We will set off at the closing of the festival around 3:00 pm. Helmets are strongly encouraged. We will ride the Historic Downtown Bikeway and finish at Forsyth Park.  Click here for the route.

Future Savannah Wheelie bike rides will be on the third Sunday of each month at 3:30pm.

Georgia Rides to the Capitol

Mayors and concerned citizens pushing for better bike facilities are coming out on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 to ride to the state capital as part of the third annual Georgia Rides to the Capitol. The event is sponsored by the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA), and we have at least one Coastal Georgia Greenway supporter who will be in attendance.

In order to raise support for the development of a regional-scale bicycle network of both on-road facilities and multi-use-trails, and a pedestrian network focused around major transit facilities and activity centers and near schools.

MAMA also intends to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycling as an important form of transportation; a beneficial economic development and tourism tool; an excellent way to maintain health and fitness; and a great sport and family activity.

We could not agree more. If you are interested in participating, or are interested in recruiting your local elected officials in participating in a symbolic ride, please contact us.

Coastal Georgia Greenway in Coastal Comprehensive Plan

The Coastal Comprehensive Plan draft under consideration by the Georgia legislature lists the Coastal Georgia Greenway as an agenda item under Transportation and Economic Development (i.e. tourism). The relevant sections can be found here or you can take a look at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs website for the full plan.

Please encourage your state representatives to support the plan generally, with creation of a Coastal Regional Council to oversee these and other matters, and specifically to support development of the Coastal Georgia Greenway.

March Start Planned for St. Marys-Fernandina Beach Ferry

According to the Camden County Tribune & Georgian, Amelia River Cruises operator Kevin McCarthy plans to begin ferry service between St. Marys, Georgia and Fernandina Beach, Florida starting in March; the service will accomodate bicycles.

As we have noted before, this service will provide a vital link to the Coastal Georgia Greenway and East Coast Greenway, giving an alternate pathway across the Georgia-Florida border, thus avoiding an unsafe passage on US-17.

Furthermore, this venture has spurred local interest in Camden County in developing the Greenway from the standpoint of economic development. Local businesses see the increased opportunities that will come both from the ferry and from recreational bicyclists. We are thrilled that St. Marys and Fernandina have joined together in this cooperative effort.

McIntosh / Glynn County Meeting

Recently awarded TE grant for phase I of the Highlander Trail and further efforts for One Georgia Grant to incorporate Darien, McIntosh County and Glynn County will be discussed. Master planning efforts on the Altamaha waterfront in Darien will also be discussed.
