Tour de Georgia 2008

We were fortunate here in Savannah on Monday to have international cycling ride through town. Stage I of the 2008 Tour de Georgia sent riders speeding from Tybee to Savannah.

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, TdG’s Chairman, also joined a group of riders on Sunday for the Ride for Research, held on a portion of the course and also a portion of the proposed Coastal Georgia Greenway route in West Chatham County along the Savannah and Ogeechee Canal. We thank the Lieutenant Governor for supporting cycling, and look forward to a continued dialogue with state government about the participatory side of bicycling.

The Tour rolls on through Georgia to the final stage in Atlanta next Sunday. Check it out if you can — these guys are fast.

Lt. Governor Cagle to Ride in Chatham this Sunday

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, who is enthusiastic about cycling, though not an avid cyclist, is confirmed to ride in the Sunday, April 20th Ride for Research. The Tour de Georgia chairman is poised to take a ride through West Chatham County this Sunday, joined by fellow cyclists in support of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Georgia Cancer Coalition. He will be joined by pro cyclists Mari Holden, Kevin Livingston, and Nathan O’Neill.

Better than that, still, is that a portion of the route (27 or 42 mile options) follows the proposed route of the Coastal Georgia Greenway in Pooler, providing an excellent opportunity to highlight economic benefits of bicycling for the local community and for state government.

The third component of this story is also quite notable: the ride is FREE. Due to an anonymous donation, the fully supported ride including snacks and beverages, and an event high quality Dri-Fit tee are available to the first 100 entrants, without the requirement of raising money (although organizers would like to encourage participants to make whatever contributions they can to these wonderful causes and recruit others to participate). Interested riders can register at active.com.

Savannah’s Ultimate Bike Weekend

April 18-21 is coming, and if you like bikes, Savannah is where you want to be.

The kickoff is Friday, April 18, with Dump the Pump sponsored by SDRA, Savannah Bicycle Campaign, PACE, CAT, and the City of Savannah. As we have noted here before, this event, where downtown workers are encouraged to leave their cars at home is intended

Dump the Pumpto raise awareness about the benefits of using alternative modes of transportation and to encourage people from throughout the community who travel to downtown (employees, residents, students, shoppers, and diners) to commute by walking, riding bicycles, skateboards, scooters, carpooling and public transportation.

Saturday, April 19 holds the first ever Savannah Wheelie, the social, family friendly bike ride put on by Savannah Bicycle Campaign to raise awareness about the need for improved bicycle facilities and safety education for motorists and cyclists. The ride, led by Mayor Otis Johnson and County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis, will traverse the Historic Downtown Bikeway. Stick around for the party at Blowin’ Smoke to follow, with live music and good food, benefitting the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

If that’s not enough, Tour de Georgia kicks off in Savannah for the first time in 5 years. The international pro cycling event kicks off with a party Saturday, April 19 at the Trade Center — the Toast de Tour — which will include introduction of the teams.

On Sunday, April 20, Tour de Georgia’s Ride for Research rolls from Tybee at 10am and will follow much of the stage I race route.
PhotoSport International, Stage I, 2007 Tour de GeorgiaMonday, April 21 brings the first stage of the Tour de Georgia to life. Racers will leave Tybee Island at 10am and traverse 71 miles, passing twice through downtown Savannah before finishing at the Savannah Civic Center.

Tour de Georgia Economics 101

Fitz Haile of the Creative Coast recently touted the potential economic impact of Tour de Georgia on local tourism, and we share his enthusiasm.

Tour de Georgia

An economic projection of the Coastal Georgia Greenway’s impact on local coastal economies revealed that the Coastal Georgia Greenway could annually

· Add $6.9 million to business revenue in 2015, rising to $15 million in 2020.
· Support 133 jobs in 2015, rising to 285 jobs in 2020.
· Generate $2.4 million in labor income in 2015, rising to $5.1 million in 2020.
· Generate $407,000 in state and local tax revenue in 2015, rising to $871,000 in 2020.
· The impact is projected to increase by 2.5% per year after 2020.
Construction expenditures of $67 million are projected to have a one-time impact that will:
· Support 1,067 jobs earning $34.4 million in labor income.
· Generate $103 million in business revenue and $2.4 million in tax revenue.
By 2025, maintenance and resurfacing expenditures of $4 million will annually:
· Support 63 jobs earning $2 million in labor income.
· Generate $6 million in business revenue and $141,000 in tax revenue.

Impressive numbers. With an impact like this, ignoring the nonquantifiable impact on quality of life (which will in turn draw more higher wage earners to the area), we can’t afford not to build the Coastal Georgia Greenway, and soon.

Spring into Bikes: April 18-21

Mark the weekend of April 18-21 on your calendar. It promises to be a great weekend for bicycles in Savannah!

CGG and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign are promoting a weekend of bicycles in the hostess city, to increase awareness of the potential benefits of improved bicycle facilities and the Greenway in particular. Friday April 18 in advance of Earth Day is Dump the Pump Day — Savannah Development and Renewal Authority’s first of 3 downtown alternative commute days.

Saturday April 19 in conjunction with the Earth Day Festival is Savannah Wheelie, a social ride through downtown, to be followed by the Post Wheelie Dealie, a party for the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. Through these events we will continue to spread the good word about the Greenway, in addition to promoting CBTC, Savannah Wheelmen and the Savannah Bike Co-op. Riding the Wheelie is free, and tickets for the Post Wheelie Dealie at Blowin’ Smoke are so worth the nominal price, available online, at Quality Bike Shop and Blowin’ Smoke, and at the door for a little bit more.

That same weekend, movers and shakers of Georgia politics will descend on Savannah for Tour de Georgia’s opening stage on April 21. A kickoff party — Toast de Tour — Saturday April 19 at 6pm, will announce the teams (contact Lora Hawk, lora [dot] hawk [a t] tourdegeorgia [dot] com, for tickets); the Ride for Research and press conference on Sunday April 20; and the stage I race from Tybee to Savannah on Monday April 21 will be included in the events. We are arranging a meeting with Tour de Georgia and state government officials while they are here for the race, using this event to emphasize the Greenway’s potential role in cycling related tourism, and the need to improve our bicycle facilities along the Tybee Road Stage I race route, as we have discussed here recently.

In total, this is the highest concentration of bicycle related events to hit Savannah in some time. It presents an excellent opportunity to show off Savannah for what it is and could be, and we hope all will come out in support of these efforts. Contact us if you would like additional information about any of these events.
