Coastal Georgia Greenway
  • Greetings! Below are photos from existing and planned trails of the Coastal Georgia Greenway. If you have photos you would like to post here, please contact us!
  • Imagine traveling on foot, bicycle or horseback through coastal Georgia, winding through arches of live oak trees on your way to tour one of many historical or recreational sites.

The Coastal Georgia Greenway is envisioned as a 450-mile trail system, which will connect South Carolina to Florida through Georgia's six coastal counties. This alternative transportation network will link the towns, attractions, recreational sites, historic and cultural sites, waterways and natural habitats of the coast. A series of trails suitable for bicyclists, joggers, equestrians, canoeists, kayakers, and other non-motorized users will be built. The centerpiece of the Coastal Georgia Greenway is a continuous trail connecting South Carolina to Florida as part of the East Coast Greenway along various north-south routes including the U.S. Highway 17 corridor, abandoned rail corridors, and historic canal corridors, from which visitors can sample coastal imagery.

Organized in March, 2000 the Coastal Georgia Greenway Steering Committee's (CGGSC) mission states: "We are creating an alternative transportation network to connect South Carolina and Florida through coastal Georgia linking historical/cultural centers, waterways, parks, wildlife preserves, lighthouses, and the historic Bartram trail for a unique human experience; to promote development of biking, hiking, equestrian and water trails to allow coastal residents to accumulate at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily; and for fostering local and regional economic development. We will also work with local governments to identify and protect open space in the region." The Coastal Georgia Greenway is being built by public-private partnerships of local jurisdictions, bike clubs, non-profit organizations and citizens who are cooperating to build the trails.Check the tabs along the sidebar for more information regarding getting involved, the latest developments, and upcoming events.
